So you’re ready to blog? There are a couple of things you will need to get started. The first is a Domain Name. And the second is a place to host your blog.

on the computerLet’s start with the Domain Name. Please remember that once you make a decision on your domain name you can’t change it. To register a brand new domain name you will pay approximately $10 a year. To purchase domain name at an auction from someone looking to sell one of their existing domain names then you could pay anywhere from $5 to hundreds of thousands of dollars or even more plus the annual registration fees. While it is always awesome to be able to find a great domain name by hand registering the domain name, it is often more likely that you can find a top notch domain name at a domain name auction. Whichever route you choose be sure and do your homework.

Next you’ll need a place to host your blog. My best advice to future and current bloggers is use WordPress. WordPress is a blog tool and publishing platform. It’s extremely easy to use once you get to know what you’re looking at, just like with any new piece of software. You can get a free WordPress blog at WordPress.com. Unfortunately you are limited in the plugins you can use and a few other features but otherwise it’s fully functional.

I have to admit that I’m pretty much a geek so that means I like to control every aspect of my digital world. So I use a hosting company for my blog. I get unlimited space, unlimited transfers, and unlimited WordPress blog sites. And I get all this for only $6.95 a month. I blog about a lot of different subjects so I really need a hosted solution for my blogs. I even host websites and friends blogs on this one account. Get a couple of blogging friends together and it will only cost you a couple of dollars each a month.

 

Time to Write

Once you are up and running it’s time to start writing. Let me warn you now…once you start typing it’s hard to stop. Writing a blog can be addictive. One of the hardest things to do is to edit yourself. Use this checklist to ask yourself a few questions as you are reading through for typos and grammar:

  • Is the topic clear to someone who only reads the headline?
  • Does the lead paragraph tell who and what the story is about and why the reader should care about it?
  • Is the angle you’ve used likely to seem newsworthy?
  • Would someone who knows absolutely nothing about this topic understand this post?
  • Is the post free of jargon?
  • Is it written in journalistic style and does it make an effort to be objective?
  • Have you peppered the headline and the post with keywords and phrases that will be attractive to search engines?
  • Did you remember to ask your readers a question at the end, or something to stimulate readers to comment?
  • Did you remember to write with the reader in mind, always keeping in mind WIIFT? (What’s in It for Them?)
